Erick Falardeau : Quelles sont les recherches que vous menez actuellement et qu’est-ce qui vous y a amené ? Clermont Gauthier : Au moment de mon arrivée à l’Université Laval en 1989, je me suis intéressé à ce que dit la documentation scientifique sur l’existence possible d’une base de connaissances en enseignement (knowledge base for teaching). Je me suis alors rendu compte qu’il y avait beaucoup de prescriptions pédagogiques non fondées sur la recherche. Or plusieurs chercheurs anglo-saxons mettaient en lien les comportements des enseignants en classe avec les performances des élèves. Pour moi, cette piste de recherche ouvrait de nouvelles perspectives en enseignement : il existerait peut-être une base de connaissances pour enseigner. Cette question a donné lieu à une recherche subventionnée : l’analyse de la littérature anglosaxonne pour déterminer quel était le contenu de cette base de connaissances. Les résultats auxquels mon équipe et moi sommes arrivés m’ont amené à écrire Pour une théorie de la pédagogie. Recherches contemporaines sur le savoir des enseignants (1997), un ouvrage important dans mon cheminement. Cet ouvrage mettait en scène deux grandes dimensions du travail enseignant : la gestion des comportements des élèves et la gestion des apprentissages.
